What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes localised fat deposits through small incisions using a thin tube (cannula). It is used to reshape areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms or chin that do not respond to diet and exercise. It is not a weight-loss treatment, and it does not tighten loose skin or remove cellulite.
Who may be a good candidate?
- adults close to a stable weight who have specific areas of stubborn fat;
- people with reasonably good skin elasticity, so the skin can adapt to the new contour;
- non-smokers, or people willing to stop smoking before and after surgery;
- people in good general health with realistic expectations.
Who may not be suitable?
- people with significant obesity, for whom Bariatric surgery or medical weight management may be discussed first;
- people with a lot of loose abdominal skin, for whom a tummy tuck may be more appropriate;
- people with certain heart, lung or blood-clotting conditions, or who take medicines that affect bleeding, unless the surgeon clears them;
- pregnancy, or planning a pregnancy soon.
Which liposuction techniques are there?
| Technique | How it works | Point to discuss |
|---|
| Tumescent liposuction | A fluid with local anaesthetic and a vessel-narrowing drug is injected before fat is removed | The basis of most modern liposuction |
| Ultrasound-assisted (for example VASER) | Ultrasound energy loosens fat before suction | May be used for fibrous areas; heat-related risks must be managed |
| Power-assisted | A vibrating cannula helps the surgeon remove fat | Can make larger areas easier to treat |
| Laser-assisted | Laser energy is applied before or during suction | Evidence for extra skin tightening is limited |
The brand name of a device matters less than the surgeon’s plan, the amount of fat removed and safety in the operating room.
How is liposuction planned in Istanbul?
- You share photos, your height and weight, and your medical history.
- The surgeon assesses your areas, skin quality and health, and may request blood tests.
- A written plan explains the areas, technique, type of anaesthesia and whether you stay overnight.
- After surgery you wear a compression garment and receive written aftercare instructions.
- A check-up takes place before you fly home; the number of days is stated in your plan.
What is recovery like?
Swelling, bruising and numbness are common at first. Walking early is encouraged to support circulation, and a compression garment is usually worn for several weeks. The final contour appears gradually over months as swelling settles. Ask the treating team when you may return to work, exercise and flying, especially if several areas are treated.
What are the risks?
- contour irregularities, asymmetry or loose skin;
- fluid collection (seroma), infection or changes in skin sensation;
- blood clots, and rare but serious complications such as fat embolism;
- higher risk when very large volumes or many areas are treated in one session.
What affects the cost of liposuction in Turkey?
The cost depends on the number and size of the areas, the technique, the type of anaesthesia, the hospital stay, compression garments and what the package includes. There is no single price; ask for a written plan that lists what is and is not included.
