E-max vs Zirconia Veneers and Crowns: What to Ask Before Your Trip

Short answer: E-max is a glass-ceramic often chosen for front-tooth veneers because its translucency resembles natural enamel. Zirconia is a very strong ceramic usually used for full crowns on weakened teeth and for bridges. The right choice depends on your teeth, bite and goals, and the treating dentist decides after an examination and X-rays.

What is the difference between E-max and zirconia?

Both are tooth-coloured ceramics, but they behave differently.

  • E-max is a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic. It can be used for veneers, crowns and some partial restorations. Light passes through it in a way that resembles enamel, which is why it is popular for front teeth.
  • Zirconia (zirconium dioxide) is a high-strength ceramic. A zirconia crown covers the whole visible tooth and is often used for teeth that are broken, heavily filled or root-canal treated, and for bridges. Zirconia crowns can be monolithic (one solid material) or layered with porcelain on top; this affects both appearance and strength, so ask which one is planned.

A simple way to think about it: E-max is usually chosen when appearance on the front teeth is the main goal and enough healthy tooth remains; zirconia is usually chosen when the tooth needs strength and full coverage. Many plans combine both. Our pages on E-max veneers and zirconia crowns give more detail.

Veneer or crown: which one do you actually need?

This question matters more than the material. A veneer covers the front surface of a tooth; a crown covers the whole tooth. A crown therefore needs more preparation of the tooth. For teeth that are healthy and only need a change in colour or shape, a less invasive option, such as whitening or thin laminate veneers, may be enough.

Before you agree to a plan, ask the treating dentist:

  • Which teeth need treatment, and why?
  • Will each tooth receive a veneer or a crown, and in which material?
  • How much of each tooth will be filed down?
  • Would a less invasive option work for me, and if not, why not?

Heavy filing of healthy teeth is one of the concerns often linked to the term “Turkey teeth”. A careful plan explains the preparation tooth by tooth, in writing.

Who may not be suitable, or needs other treatment first?

Veneers and crowns are not the right starting point for everyone. The treating dentist may recommend treating other problems first, or a different solution, if you have:

  • gum disease or untreated decay, which must be treated before any cosmetic work;
  • heavy grinding or clenching, which can chip or loosen restorations; a night guard may be recommended, and the material choice may change;
  • teeth with little remaining structure, where a crown or other treatment may be needed instead of a veneer;
  • bite problems, which need to be assessed before the design is approved.

AVAN AESTH does not coordinate any dental treatment for patients with diabetes; we refer them to a fully equipped hospital where they can be assessed directly.

How is the treatment carried out in Istanbul?

Before your trip, you send recent photos and, if you have them, dental X-rays for an initial review. The treatment itself takes place in a licensed healthcare facility, and the treating dentist leads every step:

  • Examination and planning: X-rays or scans, an assessment of your gums, roots and existing fillings, and a discussion of shape and shade. A digital or mock-up preview may be shown.
  • Preparation: the teeth are prepared as planned, and digital scans or impressions are taken.
  • Temporary teeth: temporaries are usually fitted while the laboratory makes the final restorations. They can feel different and need gentle care.
  • Try-in: shape and colour are checked before the final fitting. This is your chance to raise any concerns.
  • Final fitting: veneers are bonded or crowns are cemented, and your bite is checked before you fly home.

You choose the shade of your veneers or crowns, and you can ask for a copy of the shade record for any future repair.

AVAN AESTH is a patient coordination service, not a dental clinic. We pass your records to the dental team, arrange your appointments and organise the airport welcome, hotel, transfers and interpreter support. The dental decisions and the treatment are the treating dentist’s responsibility.

How long should you stay in Istanbul?

Veneers and crowns are usually planned over about 5–7 days in Istanbul. A common pattern is examination and planning at the start, laboratory work in between and the final fitting at the end of the stay. The exact timeline is set by the treating dentist after the examination and X-rays, and it is stated in your written plan. Book your flights only once you have that plan. Our dental treatments page shows a day-by-day example and the other treatment options.

If your plan also includes implants, these usually require two trips several months apart, because the bone needs to heal before the final tooth is fitted.

How should you look after E-max or zirconia restorations?

Neither material is permanent, and no fixed lifespan can be promised. How long veneers and crowns last depends on your bite, any grinding, biting hard objects, oral hygiene and regular check-ups. After fitting:

  • your teeth may feel a little sensitive at first, and the new shape or bite can take some getting used to;
  • brush and floss with extra care where the restoration meets the gum, and see your own dentist regularly;
  • do not use your teeth to crack nuts, open packaging or bite ice;
  • wear a night guard if the dentist recommends one;
  • tell us or your dentist quickly if something chips, feels rough, comes loose or makes your bite feel uneven.

Take home your records, X-rays and details of the materials used, so that your dentist at home knows exactly what was done.

What happens after you return home?

Follow-up continues for 2 years after you fly home, and we contact you ourselves on WhatsApp: close contact in the first week, then once a month until month 6 and every 3 months until the end of the second year. We pass your photos and questions to the treating dentist and share their answers in your language. Interpreter support is available in all 15 languages of our website.

Frequently asked questions

Is E-max better than zirconia?

Neither is better in every case. E-max is often chosen for the appearance of front teeth; zirconia is often chosen for strength and full coverage. The treating dentist recommends the material for each tooth after the examination.

Can zirconia be used for veneers?

Zirconia is mainly used for crowns and bridges, where strength and full coverage are needed. For veneers on the front teeth, E-max or other thin ceramic veneers are more commonly discussed. Ask the dentist which option suits each tooth in your plan.

Will I have temporary teeth?

Usually, yes. Temporaries are often fitted after the teeth are prepared, while the laboratory makes the final veneers or crowns. Your dentist explains how to clean them and which foods to avoid.

How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?

Veneers and crowns are usually planned over about 5–7 days. Your exact dates are set in your written plan after the examination and X-rays.

Do I have to pay in advance?

No. No advance payment is taken. Your plan is prepared in writing after the X-rays in Istanbul.
